Hi Sabrina, I think not enough people know they can get a damn nice website, pre designed for a small amount of cash, if they did there would be so many nicer website out there and they might take a bit of pride in a nice site. Who knows ?

I appreciate your testimonials above Sabrina, but i also couldn't help but wonder why are you still doing it? You wrote "even broke people deserve nice websites", i think you meant to wrote it this way: "even broke people deserve nice templates". Coz that's what you do, and maybe yes you change some things from the template to make it look different than the original, but still i think you're not really solving the problem, it's like you're doing the cut and paste design, where's the proccess that goes on with it?? the construction of grid, the colors, typo and other design elements??? as far as i know a problem can be solved by finding the core of it and start to make a solution out of it, not by searching through templates. It's funny if a client asked you "Hei, i think i've seen this homepage before, are you sure you design this by yourself?" and you answer "Yeah, of course i design it based on several templates provided on ....website." Geee, c'mon now, if you want to help poor people get a nice websites, then you should give them something nice, not something cheap, they deserve to get their solution from your creative thinking proccess and not from templates, if you think that's a waste of time and energy for a little amount of money you'll get then don't do it, don't accept the client. Be proud with what you think and create, cheers!

I'm in complete agreement in this movement. I pride myself on designing websites and then coding them using standards-compliant HTML, CSS and any other language required to get the job done.

I started out a decade ago and I'm now at a point that I want to get projects off the ground quicker and quicker but as a fair few of you have mentioned, including the author of this blog post, the turn-around when designing and coding from scratch takes up a lot more time and in return costing the client more and potentially losing return business.

Not all clients have endless budgets and we really have to cater for those who do have budgets and want to keep things on the low.

If I can acquire more business because I've produced a website for a client using a premium theme with custom images suited to the client's business as well as their content with perhaps a few tweaks to the design/code here and there, then I most certainly will do so.

I can pride myself in knowing that if required, I am able to design and develop websites from scratch.

Great blog post -- a very interesting read indeed!

Man...it's great to hear there are people who agree with my new outlook on web design and development. I was once the same as many people. HTML-CSS-jQuery from scratch. Templates...BAH. Now that I've been in business for myself for about 3 years as a one man show, I've gotten a lot smarter. Rectangles are rectangles. I have yet to see a web layout that made me think "now that's completely different". I've moved on to only doing totally custom "from scratch" work for people who have the budget to support it, rather than making myself insane for the guy who wants to trade me a chicken for a website. Wordpress rocks, and premium html templates have changed my life into a much less stressful and much more efficient existence. Clients are happier because the turnaround is faster, and my wife no longer has to listen to me grind my teeth at night. Using these tools allows me to focus on design, which is what I really love to do. CHEERS PEOPLE !

Hi Sabrina,
This whole area is quite interesting, and i think the issue is more one for traditional coders rather than those who choose to use/modify templates.

I'm a novice and i recently asked for look and feel feedback on a webmaster forum on the 2nd site i've done. (voluntary basis: www.ballydehobjazzfestival.org).

I made it clear it was a modded theme, and got one response only. I suspect wordpress is seen as a threat in that it brings the technology closer to the 'common man'. It's easier if you've got the time, enthusiasm, and a reasonable level of intelligence to self teach and produce something.

This part of the IT sector is evolving so why fight it. The most important factor is the end result, not the manufacturing process.

Keep on whoring, it's an age old profession and you know how to deliver those results!

Templates, what would we do without them. I love using templates and I don't see any problem using one. Customizing it to your preference is just making it look more great.
