Election Night Party

Come one, come all, to the greatest show on Earth: the 2008 US election. We’re quietly getting excited about an Obama win over here on Gilabbey Street. Me and Election Projection Stats Junkie Nerd Boy are gearing up for a long night of election returns on the fourth of November, and you are cordially invited to geek out with us and color in happy little blue states on your very own electoral map.

There will be Obama Family Chili, Baked Alaska, stars and stripes cupcakes, beer, wine and plenty of fuel for late night revelers. Obviously, you’re free to go home well before the California results start to roll in after 5 AM, but we’ll be up all night. At that point I’ll be weeping with unbridled joy or lighting my passport on fire, but either way it looks like it will be quite a night.

Assuming we can gather up at least half a dozen people for a couple of hours that evening, we’ll add party games like Pundit Bingo, Who Wants to Be an American Citizen, and an electoral vote sweepstakes. You are welcome to bring your pyjamas, and we’ll bundle you and your teddy into a taxi when you’ve had your fill of election night fun.

RSVP in the comments below, and sincerely, whoever you are, we’d love to have some company on the night.

PS: I will be taking the Tuesday and Wednesday off. Because after eight long years of this horseshit, I deserve it.

  1. Joe:

So I was more excited about your Obama, er, election party when I thought you were all Irish! Still, it’s cool that you care even though you don’t live here in the States anymore. Let’s pray the polls are all accurate… if not, you got a guest house I can crash in for 4 years?
p.s. found this blog by googling “best designed blogs”. Google works again! Awesome to look at…

  2. Ken McGuire:

I’ll have a stars and stripes cupcake from Kilkenny and hoist a beer in your honour :)

  3. Ciara Crossan:

You sure do! :) You deserve a month off!
You know I love staying up past midnight to drinking and talking shite…so count me in!
    xoxox

  4. simon:

    McCain supporters barred?

  5. Enda Crowley:

I’d love to go to your Election party (If I can, a 17-yo at an election party might be odd for ye!) – I’ll bake some “American-style” (best we can get in Ireland) cookies and everything.

  6. Sabrina Dent:

Joe, thanks for the compliment, that’s nice to hear. I had no idea Google loved me so!

Ken, we’ll raise a cupcake in your honour.

Simon, you’re very welcome. I suspect you’ll be a tad lonely in your cheering section but nobody will hold it against you. Do come.

Ciara and Enda, we’ll see you on the night! :)

  7. Eugene:

I am looking for some idea and stumble upon your posting :) decide to wish you Thanks. Eugene

  8. Jaime Hemmett:

Love the idea, I hope we can have a similar event with our friends in Dublin! cupcakes and all. I’m jaimekristene and just started following you on twitter.

  9. simon:

never said I supported McCain :)
just seems to be an awful lot of chicken counting.
Also seems alot of people on this side of the water seem to equate supporters for republicans as being stupid white trash and evil and imagine if a McCain supporter turned up that is what I think alot of people would think of them. Not suggesting that this is your thinking at all.

  10. Sabrina Dent:

Oh believe me, I am with you on the chicken counting. But I think this is going to be an historic election; I think it’s going to be one of those “where were you when… ?” nights. I don’t think there’s been this kind of personal fealty and emotional identification with a candidate’s vision in the US since, well, you know… Kennedy.

And I want to be there, where “be there” means an event just slightly larger than me sitting at home with my husband and my box of crayons. Even if we’re on our own when it’s all done and someone concedes, it’s important to me that we had a night that night, one way or the other.

It’s been a really, really long eight years.

  11. Martin:

Damn, I can’t get there. But will be on IRC, and I’m taking the next day off.

So, who’s up for predicting the Electoral College total?

  12. Katherine:

    Me, me, me!!!

Can I come? Can I sleep on your floor when it’s all joyfully completed?

  13. Sabrina Dent:

Katherine YES and YES! Delighted :) We have a (completely moving-boxed-up) guest room for you :)

  14. Nathalie:

Aw, I would love, love, LOVE to go but I will in two days into my new job running off to Cork for all-nighter parties would probably be frowned up. But I’ll be hosting one in the apartment that night (no Stars and Stripes cupcakes, but the next best thing – Obama logo cup cakes!) though so maybe I can Skype you and it will feel like we’re one big happy family….

  15. Martha Rotter:

YES – Baked Alaska is an awesome idea! I am definitely going to try to make this, Sabrina, but I have a speaking gig that night (who schedules these things?!) that I will try to get out of.

If not, I will be cheering on Nader & co. late into the night here in Dublin.

And Simon, I am *definitely* with you on the chicken counting. As someone from the Midwest, I think a lot of Irish people are going to be surprised at how close this election will be.

  16. Rory:

    So Honey,
looks like a night to remember, will try and get there, hoping my “if anyone Cain Mc Cain Cain” badge gets here in time, but at least i have my combeover wig at the ready. Are you running odds on the magnificent beast and his HMILF winning. and think, she will be only one hunting accident away from being president , wow. Is the world ready
re the predicting the electoral college results, I think Good old boy Jed Bush has already published the Florida results.

  18. Sean O' Grady:

I’ve been quite surprised with myself this year. I have absolutely no interest in Irish politics, but I try to read and know everything about the US Presidential Election this year. It just feels so refreshing to see a genuine politician such as Obama speak about not only what the American people need, but what the world needs too. When Bush was elected in 04 I remember being in a state of shock. For America to redeem itself, they need to elect Barack. The whole world is crying out for it. And hey, if America doesnt want Barack, Ireland will take him.

  19. Arlene:

Hi! Just came across your blog while googling election night get-togethers in Cork. I’m desperate to watch the results with someone so may very well show up!
