If Found, Please Return To…

It’s only 8 AM and already it’s a very strange day.
I woke up this morning as usual, put on the coffee, stumbled into my office, and discovered that I have nothing to do.
I mean, I have things I can do – there are plenty of client sites scheduled into my workbook for the next quarter, a presentation for Creative Camp to put together, blog posts to be written, some people I need to chase, some emails I need to send, and some invoices to generate.
But there’s nothing I have to do, right now, today. There appears to be no pressing priority task for the morning.
You’d think that this would be cause for a celebratory shot of something naughty in my morning java. After all, this is supposedly one of the benefits of working for yourself – on mornings like this you’re supposed to be able to greet the day with a joyous, leisurely stretch and make lazy plans for a manicure and perhaps a three martini lunch.
Except that is very much not what is happening here this morning. Because honestly, in all the years I’ve been doing whatever the hell it is that I do, this has never happened before. Not once, unless I have frantically pulled all nighters to be able to book time off, have I ever woken up to a day where there isn’t something that clearly needs to be done immediately. No matter what any book on working for yourself might tell you, this simply never happens.
So this morning finds me frantically rooting through various piles of paper, flipping through notes, and re-reading emails, looking for a clue as to whatever the hell it is I’m supposed to be doing.
Because I’m not just afraid I’ve forgotten a task.
I’m afraid I’ve forgotten an entire client.

Don’t yank my chain like that, have mercy!
that’s really funny – I think it’s one of the reasons why I’m better off not freelancing – the number of times I need to be reminded to do stuff in work is ridiculous.
18.02.2008, 9:50 amHey Mrs, go enjoy is what I say! Relax, take it easy, take the break when you are getting it. Why else work for yourself?
